The Three Parallel Rivers and rare animal & plant habitats

Summary of tour

Day 1 – Arrive in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province. City tour if time permits.

Day 2 – Chengdu Panda Breeding Center, the biggest in the world with more than 80 giant pandas at different ages. In the afternoon, visit Jinsha Museum about the history of Sichuan some 3000 years ago. Silk Museum where demonstrating the traditional culture of silk making in this area 2000 years ago. Sichuan Opera at night.

Day 3 – Chengdu to Panzhihua City by Yangtze River, following the South Silk Road, which was a important trade road between China and Burma, India 2500 years ago. Ya’an where the first giant panda was found in 1869, Xichang Launching Center on the way.

Day 4 – Panzhihua to Lijiang in Yunnan, the home of Naxi People who are well known for its Dongba Culture with pictographs. Lijiang Old Town in the afternoon, a world heritage site. Naxi music at night, which believed to be the court music of Mongolian in 13th century.

Day 5 – Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with a elevation of 5596m, the home of many rare animals and plants, including over 60 kinds of animals like Golden Monkeys, leopards, Red Pandas, and over 3200 kinds of plants with more than 60 species of primrose, 50 species of rhododendrons, and 70 species of orchids. Local Naxi people village Yushuizhai, the base of Joseph Rock in early 20th century when he was studying plant and picking seeds in Asia.

Day 6 – Lijiang to Zhongdian, an ethnic Tibetan area. Tiger Leaping Gorge on the way, the second deepest gorge in the world.

Day 7 – Zhongdian to Tacheng in Baima snow mountain, the hometown of Golden Monkey. Napa Lake, the habitat for the Black-necked cranes which are in danger. Tibetan village by the lake and family visit.

Day 8 – Visit the Golden Monkey Center in the morning, talk to the researchers and see the monkeys in the wild. Ride to Weixi town by Mekong River in the afternoon,with a visit to Labadi village of Lisu people on the way.

Day 9 – Ride to Liuku city,following Mekong and enjoy the nice views of Gaoligong Mountain (5128m),Biluo mountains(4379m),and the gorges of Mekong and Salween.

Day 10 – Liuku to Tengchong along Salween River, and the famous Burma Road during WW2. Baihualing Birding area in Gaoligong Mountain, one of the best areas for Birding in China, has more than 340 kinds of birds. Gaoligong is named the “the Gene Bank of Plants” in the world, with over 4300 kinds of plants, among them 10% can only be found here. Dai people village at Lujiangba, and the Hinayana Buddhist temple with pagodas.

Day 11 – Visit Tengchong, a beautiful town near Burma. Volcano Park, Old Ginkgo village, traditional paper making art, Heshun old village with rape seed flowers blooming in country in Winter. The Stilwell Road during WW2.

Day 12 – Hot Spring geo-park in the morning, the Flying Tiger Statue, then fly to Xishuangbanna.

Day 13 – Visit the Wild Elephant Valley which has 300 wild Asian elephants in the jungle between China and Laos. Cruise on Mekong River in the afternoon.

Day 14 – Fly to Kunming, connecting flight home.

Note: Winter is the best season to do this tour, as the chances are good to see the animals in the wild.
